Warning: Long post ahead.

Shades of gray - my 2cents worth

When I was young, I used to think things in either black or white, wrong or right. I'd tell my parents the world is fair, and end up in arguments with my dad as he rebuts my saying. Needless to say, against a child, the adult's classic ' I've more life experience than you' lecture always wins. Nevertheless, being the obstinate ass I was, and probably still am, I never did believe my dad.

Strange enough, some 10years later, I find myself subconsciously growing on what my dad said. I guess he was right after all. Look at the world around us, it's really shades of gray everywhere. Things are often, if not always, ambiguous and controversial. Good or bad, they come as a whole. So I think upon the world before me, before us. Was the world our ancestors lived in, this complex? I think not. Many things forbidden back then are now condoned and categorised as 'controversies' . Things thought to be plain wrong are now gaining acceptance, some even supported. A classic case? Abortion. Killing lives' plain wrong, something no justification can overthrow. Back in the olden days, the whole idea of abortion is absurd. But this clearly isn't the case in modern day society, given that people are now much more accepting towards the idea or even supportive. We now focus on the benefits things brings about, on the pros rather than cons, boons rather than bane. Nothing wrong with this thinking though, it's always good to be positive.

Back to my point, I was wondering what happened in between generations that's resulted in such drastic change in our perspectives. From vehemently protesting against certain ideas to being neutral towards it and finally, acceptance - my take's the change of mindset. People are now more expressive compared to the past. We believe in freedom of speech, and in freedom in general. People justify their doings with reasons - legitimate or not, warped thinking or not, pulling strings of the hearts, hoping to gain acceptance. Birds of the same feather flock, one thing brings about another and soon a whole bunch of us subscribe to the same ideology. More is strength, so quickly, these new ideologies spread like wildfire, catching us all. People start becoming more 'liberal' in a sense.

I find the ability of people to influence one another so extensively freaky though. All these complexity of things gets me sometimes. If given a choice, I'd like to travel back in time and live in the 50s - time of great music; time before the of 1960s - shifty era where all these changes and presence of controversies probably arose.

Speaking of changes, does anybody feel like this world's moving too fast? Like this whole generation's overly focused on development? That technology is a little too advanced and about to get even crazier with people working on even newer technologies and what not? I fear days where robots assassinate humans, or humans becomes robots. *shivers* Maybe, just maybe, all the masterminds behind these rapid changes, development and advancements should slow down their pace a little, find some time for sips of coffee. And since they're at it, they might want to take some time to admire nature and it's beautiful landscapes before they get destroyed to make space for yet another high-rise building or factory producing goods we want, not need.

I think we're all too caught up with advancement, with the desire for change, to the point where it scares me. Don't tell me I'm silly. Look at the craze over iPhone that's yet to die down. People are so obsessed with technology -I sometimes think we're intoxicated. I fear technology's alike to fire - that we might just burn ourselves if we're not careful. Contentment might not be such a bad thing sometimes.

Question : What if advancement, like fashion, is a cycle? What if, we don't know, but this rapid advancement is the end of the chain after which is followed by the primitive days, back to when mankind first came about?

PS. You've made it to the end of this post! And if you're asking, yes, I'm yet again feeling confused with life. But it's alright because this is the time to be confused. I'm glad I am. Are you confused about life too? :)
